Bill Henson 2010 seeks Classification for New Exhibition Featuring Nude Minor

Image via Bim bam boom

KRudd branded his art “revolting” and police seized his work from a gallery exhibition in 2008 but that hasn’t deterred controversy-courting photographer, Bill Henson, from continuing to work nor, it seems, to shift his subject matter from naked youths.

Roslyn Oxley9 Gallery in Paddington, the same that hosted one of the biggest Sydney art scene scandals in recent times two years ago when police seized several of Henson’s exhibiting works after allegations that they were pornographic images of minors, are showing the photographer again this May. However, in an unusual move, the gallery has sought classification for the show despite no legal obligation to do so.  They will print the classification rating on invitations and advertising material.

No charges were laid by police in 2008 after the Office of Film and Literature Classification deemed the images of a 13 year old girl “mild and justified” and recommended a PG rating.

This latest exhibition Bill Henson, 2010 opens May 6 and will reportedly include among landscapes and images of sculpture, 10 portraits of a nude girl.

Audrey Kawasaki vs Bill Henson

American illustrator Audrey Kawasaki has been heralded as a ‘rising star’ by the art and design world, with enthusiasts hungrily lapping up her every brush stroke. There is no doubt that her ghostly, erotic figures are beautifully drawn and have been rendered with a considerable degree of skill. But there is something sinister about the ‘women’ Kawasaki paints. That something is the impression that these women do not appear to be women at all – they look like children. Continue reading about Audrey Kawasaki (NSFW) →

First Bill Henson, Now Polixeni Papapetrou

Art Monthly Australia has created some controversy this month with their latest issue featuring a naked girl on the cover.

Given that Bill Henson’s Photographs were given a G rating by the classification office, what are we to make of these new images by Polixeni Papapetrou?

According to Dr Martin Jolley, who is head of photography at the Australian National University and co-authors an article in this months Art Monthly about Bill Henson

“We aren’t going to let the tabloid media … dictate what we can and can’t show and we are not going to let politicians, who are always wanting to jump on populist bandwagons dictate what we can and can’t show.”

Someone needs to tell that to Morris Dilemma.

OUT(r)AGE: Bill Henson, but why not the rest of us?

As a preface, click the image below to read this article from the Sunday Telegrapahs May 18th edition.

What a week(end) it has been for the art community in Australia. We haven’t had this much publicity since Ken Done was declared bankrupt, and all for the wrong reasons. It all started when what promised to be rather low key affair at the Roslyn Oxley Gallery, instead turned into the mother of all publicity juntas.

An Artist that (quite sadly) the general public would know next to nothing about (Internationally renowned Photographer Bill Henson) has turned into Australia’s answer to Guillermo Habacuc Vargas because of his latest photographic exhibition. Now the previous article on this site by Sy Rogers has created some excellent articulate discussion for both sides of the argument, but I wanted to come at this from a different angle.
