Art for Arts Sake

If anyone missed 4 Corners on the ABC on monday, then you missed out on an excellent show on the Australian Art scene.

ABC LOGO A GO GO?

According to some news sources the famed ABC squiggle logo is going up in smoke. The squiggle which is one of the most easily recognizable logos in the country was created by ABC graphic designer Bill Kennard, who was paid £25 for the image. According to the ABC themselves and our source inside Aunty it isn’t, and the release they put out is accurate.

Kim Dalton, Director of Television said “ABC TV is refreshing its on-air image for 2008, including its logos for both TV channels. “But feel assured the ABC icon “wave” or “worm’ logo will remain very much part of this new look for both networks. “The new concept will launch on air on Friday February 8 and will help differentiate the two channels and give them a distinctive personality and appeal”

Who will turn out to be correct, and do you even care? :)

Not Quite Art - Icons And Opportunities: 10:00pm Tuesday, 16 Oct 2007

Another great art show on ABC starting this week headed up by Marcus Westbury, so check it out.

Presenter Marcus Westbury travels to Newcastle, Australia and looks at the vibrant art culture emerging from outside the art palaces. Marcus contrasts this with the Scottish city of Glasgow and its transformation from industrial age casualty to the hub of youth art in Europe.

Marcus asks whether you can buy culture by building an iconic building or even franchising a McLouvre or McGuggenheim? Or is culture a messy, dirty thing that comes from the bottom up, refuses to behave, is borderline illegal and breaks a lot of occupational health and safety rules?

First episode: 10:00pm Tuesday, 16 Oct 2007

Artists At Work: ABC TV 10:00pm Tuesday

Artists At Work is another excellent production by “our” ABC. This series showcases different Australian artists doing what they do. In the first episode they focussed on the amazing work of Linde Ivimey, while last nights episode was dedicated to Roadkill - dance work based on stories of alienation and the real life Joanne Lees and Peter Falconio case. Can you imagine a commercial station having anything about the arts (besides shows like Ralph TV).
Thank god we can still see decent fare like this on the drug of the nation (television)

Artists At Work is on ABC TV @ 10:00pm Tuesday Nights
