Photographer Ben Searcy, who was awarded the $30,000 first prize in the Doug Moran contemporary photographic competition, said he wanted to make a political point about Hicks and his family being denied a “fair go”.
Waiting For News On David was taken on the fifth anniversary of Davids detention without trial at Guantanamo.
“We want to make sure we defend the rights of all citizens,” Searcy said earlier today.
“Whether we disagree with some of their views, just give everyone a fair go, which is John Howard’s statement.
“In this case, I don’t think we have. It’s just been too long, it’s ridiculous.
“Even if you totally disagree with someone’s views, we have to have a basic standard and a citizenship right, which I think has been neglected.”
