The Death of the Paper Industry

Is the paper industry in the final death throes of its heyday?   Macquarie analyst Alex Pollack sounded the death knell for daily newspapers yesterday when he recommended Fairfax Media axe its Melbourne and Sydney newspapers to boost profits.   The Australian (owned by rival group News Corp) reported Pollack’s prediction that 'Delivering digital-only ...

Death to PowerPoint

Fashions of the field

Design Federation went a-walking on Saturday, through the gentrified fields of The Hawkesbury for our second photoshoot for The Federation Annual and it all went swimmingly. A little too much so for moi, who ended up in the drink after scaling across a mossy rock ledge with all the confidence ...

Seeking Melbourne based Indian designers!

Multicultural Arts Victoria is working with the Arts Centre on an event that is focusing on the Indian community based in London. We are offering Melbourne designers of Indian descent a chance to showcase their original work as part of this event at no cost. A stall space will be provided at an Arts Centre venue that can be designed and decorated as the designer likes. This is an opportunity to promote and also to sell work on the spot.  Work can be fashion or otherwise and does not have to be obviously ‘Indian’ in a traditional sense. The designer needs to be present at the stall during the event to liaise with the public. Please contact Andrea Makris for more information by Wednesday 25th August 2010:  events@multiculturalarts.com.au

Ken Cato

Ken with Gold Coast QCA student Chris Bouffler

Australia’s most well known graphic designer made a fleeting two day visit to Brisbane and the Gold Coast last week to talk to staff, students and alumni of the Queensland College of Art.

Ken gave seminar presentations at the Griffith University South Bank campus and the Sheraton Mirage on the Gold Coast where he spoke about his work, the AGIdeas conference and the future of design.

He also expressed his disappointment at the practise of free pitching within the design industry and praised the potential of cross-cultural design as a way to ‘do design differently’. He also raved about his clients and described them as creative colleagues.

The two day series of events were organised by Griffith Enterprise, in conjunction with the QCA and offered up opportunities for the students to network with the design industry and showcase their work in a variety of forums, as well as giving a range of designers the chance to hear Ken speak.
