The Death of the Paper Industry

The Death of the Paper Industry

Is the paper industry in the final death throes of its heyday?   Macquarie analyst Alex Pollack sounded the death knell for daily newspapers yesterday when he recommended Fairfax Media axe its Melbourne and Sydney newspapers to boost profits.   The Australian (owned by rival group News Corp) reported Pollack’s prediction that 'Delivering digital-only ...

Death to PowerPoint

Death to PowerPoint

If you’re like me, the prospect of having to sit through one more PowerPoint presentation makes me want to gnaw my own arm off. Most people use PowerPoint because it’s the default standard and if you plan to give a presentation on an unknown computer you tend to stick with ...

Fashions of the field

Fashions of the field

Design Federation went a-walking on Saturday, through the gentrified fields of The Hawkesbury for our second photoshoot for The Federation Annual and it all went swimmingly. A little too much so for moi, who ended up in the drink after scaling across a mossy rock ledge with all the confidence ...

Brisbane Semi-Permanent Review

Brisbane Semi-Permanent Review

I trooped off with yet another group of students this year to see the Brisbane Semi-Permanent extravaganza. Unlike Sydney’s two-day speaker fest, we only get one day up here, but boy are we grateful for this one day. They’ve been running in Brisbane for three years now and every year ...

MoMA exhibit dies five weeks into show

Victimless LeatherOne of the central works in the exhibition “Design and the Elastic Mind” at the Museum of Modern Art in New York (until 12 May), Victimless Leather, a small jacket made up of embryonic stem cells taken from mice, has died. The artists, Oron Catts and Ionat Zurr, say the work which was fed nutrients by tube, expanded too quickly and clogged its own incubation system just five weeks after the show opened.

Catts and Zurr run a laboratory at the University of Western Australia in Perth; this combines artistic practice with scientific research. The jacket is one of several works created as part of their Tissue Culture & Art Project. Speaking to The Art Newspaper for a televised interview, Paola Antonelli, head of MoMA’s architecture and design department and curator of the show, says she had to make the decision to turn off the life-support system for the work, basically “killing” it.

A Collection of Bedtime Stories for Adults by Josef Lee

Feb 14The Adventures of Yutaro

The brilliant Josef Lee is back with 2 more works of art (click the images above or the links to see them)

His 2nd story – ‘Feb 14′  is a quirky love story between a Giant and the Statue of Liberty. Like Cloverfield, but minus the mass destruction.

The 3rd story, only recently released is titled ‘The Adventures of Yutaro’, a modern and strange Japanese folktale about a half-fish, half-human boy named Yutaro.

For more info, you can check out his recent interview with SCENE360, the film and arts online magazine for my short stories.

Fashion Weak

Fashion Weak

So I just flew in from attending some Melbourne and Sydney fashion week shows and I have to say, what the fuck is going on with the models?

We know it happens all the time – people say the models are too thin, but maybe it’s because they actually are. Having seen them first hand – I have to say, some of these girls look revolting. And while it may be the clothes look better on thin girls, if we wanted to see skeletons we could have gone to the cemetery and dug up some corpses. Read the rest of this entry →
