Our resident photographer extraordinaire Bianca Milani was lucky enough to get an exclusive phone interview with Nona Marie Invie of Dark Dark Dark – So lets embrace the light and get to it!
Nona Marie Invie: Hey Bianca.
Bianca Milani: Hey Nona, how are you?
N: Good how are you?
B: I am very Swell. (Nona laughs). So tell me a bit about how Dark Dark Dark started? I heard you began busking across Minneapolis to New Orleans…?

N: We just kind of started with Marshall and I while we were in Minneapolis and we started playing music together. We kind of just had our eye on going south and getting out of the Minneapolis winter. So we just started playing and meeting people along the way, asking people all the time to play with us until we go to the group that we have today.
B: You have toured a lot around Europe and the US, and this is your first tour in Australia?
N: It is yes.
B: Are you looking forward to playing at Harvest Festival? I can tell you now we are really excited to hearing you guy’s play.
N: I am really excited to see Santigold! I hope I get to dance to her music at every festival, it’s so good.
B: I can see in the past you have had a lot of artistic ventures. Will we be seeing some sort of collaboration here in Australia?
N: Oh man! That would be amazing! (Laughs) I hope so. (Laughs)
B: Awesome. Harvest festival is largely based around the arts, so hopefully there is an opportunity for you to go and collaborate with some of the performers.
N: That would be really amazing. I really hope that, that happens. (Laughs)
B: (Laughs) We should probably introduce you to some of our friends that are performing at Harvest. The boys from ‘Briefs’ would have a ball with you guys.
N: (Laughs) For sure.
B: A quick question about your new album ‘Who needs who’?. I have listened to it a couple of times now and I can really feel the emotion behind it. Given the circumstances over the last year, have any of the hurdles you have crossed emotionally, have they given your inspiration towards your lyrics?
N: Yes definitely. I mean it’s surely a record of what has happened between me and Marshall over the last couple of years. Hopefully… hopefully I am maturing too, but as of now it just stands of the record of what was going on in my life, in that realm.
B: What is one of the thing you are looking forward to dong over here in Australia?
N: I really hope that I get to go to the beach. That’s what I would love to do.
B: The beaches here are amazing! How long are you staying here for?
N: I think the festival is about two weeks so, so I don’t really know what will be happening. But I really hope there is a chance for a beach party.
B: The weather is getting warmer so hopefully there will be. You should probably do a road trip from Melbourne to Sydney and stop at some of the beaches along the way.

N: I would love that. I hope that someone whisks me away on an adventure while I am there.
B: OH! Well when we see you at Harvest we will try to organise something for you. Maybe we can take you down to the Great Ocean Road.
N: (Laughs) Thanks you so much. That sounds great.
B: Thank you so much for your time today Nona. We look forward to partying with you at Harvest Festival.
N: Thank you very much again Bianca.
