Design Federation puts on its gasmask and chats with Reka from Everfresh studio, no toxic fumes were created in this interview we have been told it is was carbon neutral.

What and who are Everfresh Studios and what is your role in the group?
Everfresh is a street-based art studio located in the backwoods of Melbourne, Australia. There are over 8 artists that use this space to collaborate and produce artwork for exhibitions and curate large scale murals. These artists include Prizm, Phibs, Meggs, Sync, Rone, Wondalust, The Tooth and myself, Mr Reka. My role in the group is to kick anyone up the arse if they’re slacking off!!

Whose work do you relate to most? Who inspires you?
I get allot of inspiration by traveling and experiencing different cultures. We all source inspiration from different areas, whether its nature, back street alley dumpsters, rust from a water pipe, a dead pigeon etc. Artists that inspire me would include Jean Michel Basquiat, Keith Harring, Andy Warhol, Os Gemeos, Barry Mcgee, Doze Green…

What is the most enjoyable aspect of collaboration work?
Not knowing the end result. Creating harmony from total chaos

How do you want other people to respond to the art?
I want people to stop and think a little more about the content matter. Its not all about painting a pretty picture.

Is Australia becoming more conservative?
No. Quite the opposite actually…

Do you think there was a turning point that led to “street art” being seen as a more respectable form of art?
I don’t think we’re quite there yet. Baby steps….

What motivates the group?
Paint fumes, spilt bong water, pigeon shit, mixtapes, fatcaps and longnecks…

Favourite brand of sneakers?
$2 Thongs

Do you have a favourite song about graffiti?
“American Graffitti” - Ex Vandals
