Interview with ghostpatrol
ghostpatrol, the amazing self taught artist who resides in melbourne, gives us a little insight into what makes him tick, and proves that big furry creatures are not just for little kids!
What is your name or handle and where are you located
ghostpatrol, melbourne mitten fortress studio
Where did you learn your craft?
self taught, learning from friends and books

What is your artistic medium of choice? Why that medium?
blank walls and spray-paint, for large scale works or 0.1 fine liner on creme paper, for fine details and secret creations in black books
Have you always been focused in this particular area?
no, i only really started about 4 years ago. before that i was heading to a life of boredom in an I.T. degree
Whose work do you relate to most? Who inspires you?
I spend most of my time working with and look at graffiti and illustration. I’m pretty keen on Dylan Martorell, Neckface, David Shrigley, James Greenaway (Jagi) and Beatrix Potter

Do you enjoy collaboration work?
You bet, i share a studio with the dreamy Miso. We’ve collaborated on many occasion and i often call upon her to improve my work. I’ve had many great trips to Europe to work with some amazing artists both on and off the streets. It’s nice to have someone push you in different directions, techniques, colours an themes sometimes.
How do you think/want other people to respond to your art?
I hope people who discover my art smile. It would be nice to awaken people from their normal live and transport them to a more beautiful place.
What are your thoughts on the fact they’re making a live-action film of Where the Wild Things Are?
neat the first picture they released was nice. But i won’t comment until i’ve seen the final product.

What was it like winning a threadless comp without even entering?
odd, i’d never heard of threadless, seems like a big load of bollocks to me though Miso and I will have a design released in the Threadless ‘Select’ range next year. They’ve helped to fund some less commercial aspects of our work.
What makes Melbourne so attractive to people interested in creating art?
I like being here because i get to work with a great community of street artists and illustrators there seem to be more than enough opportunities to put on a show, publish something and grow creatively.

What tunes do you pump out while working?
mixes of stuff: talkings heads, kes, El Perro Del Mar, Smiths, Beirut, Beatles etc
Have you ever used comic sans in a commercial work?
No, but I do enjoy the power it has to discredit anything it touches.
