DFX 9 plug-in for Winamp and Vista 64-bit fun

March 5th, 2009

Recently I downloaded a trial version of the DFX 8 plug-in for Winamp, which according to the FXsound website is

“Incredibly Easy To Use. Simply turn on DFX and be amazed at the added sound clarity and punch that your media player provides”

I was so impressed by the improvement in sounds quality of my mp3s that I thought this is a must buy and for only $20-30 it isn’t much to spend if you listen to music all day long whilst working.

Having tested DFX 8, I thought the new version DFX 9 should work fine as it now states on FXsound website that

“DFX 9 adds support for 64-bit Windows operating environments, so now 64-bit Windows users can experience DFX-enhanced sound quality from their media player”

and seeing as I use Vista 64-bit, one would assume the software would work flawlessly.

Having uninstalled its previous version DFX 8, the new version DFX 9 installed fine, tried to do a weird callout through my firewall which I allowed and then closed its installation screen, finishing up the process with no errors.

I excitedly fired up Winamp expecting to see the DFX 9 plug-in for Winamp load, but it didn’t happen.

Having many years of computer technician experience, I would have thought maybe with some tweaking I could get DFX 9 to load, so I tried every possible trick to make DFX 9 plug-in for Winamp work (aside from reinstalling my machine).

So having tried uninstalling the plug-in, reinstalling it, clearing the registry of all DFX entries, deleting old and hidden files, and even reinstalling Winamp, I was hoping the problem might be solved, but sadly it wasn’t.

Unfortunately, there doesn’t seem to be any real way to contact the people at FXsound except via an online feedback form which states they will contact you within 48hrs to which they didnt, and there is no forum I can find aside from the Winamp one discussing the DFX 9 plug-in.

So what can one do? Try to contact the company and ask them to fix it, ask paypal for a refund, or cut my losses and do more research the next time…

…and people wonder why piracy is so widespread.

Well… it’s really strange, cause I also run vista x64 and have no problems with dfx plugin, the only thing makes me mad – I can’t register it at all! What a shame!

  3. locky says:

iulian, did you install it over DFX 8? also, what winamp do you use?

  4. iulian says:

before installing the new dfx 9, I’ve removed the older version and deleted all keys in registry related to dfx
