Six Years Later is a visual art magazine/art book intended to get your thinking juices flowing about serious issues within today’s culture.

It is an annual publication run by a group of four aspiring young artists that heavily relies on contributions and support from other young artists our there. We hope to build an escape for designers and artists who are constantly stressing about what type of work will get them a job. We’re going back to the old school and reaching out to those of us who still love that luscious feeling of turning a page of all-natural uncoated paper. There are no articles (who likes reading anyway?) so everything that is said is done so through your art.

We’re in the process of compiling artwork for our first issue revolving around the theme of ‘Consumerism’ and where that’s leading in six years.

The deadline is the 24th of September so get crackin’!

Peroni havelaunched the second annual Peroni Young Designer Awards with the support of Harper’s BAZAAR and men’s style magazines. Renowned fashion designer and Peroni ambassador; Antonio Berardi will visit Australia to judge these awards in October, awarding one lucky winner a trip to Milan to visit his studio.

In 2010, the Peroni Young Designer Awards will be seeking entries from up-and-coming fashion and industrial designers from across Australia. Entries are required to represent Peroni’s Italian heritage and brand values of high quality, style and attention to detail as well as incorporating a “blue ribbon”. Antonio Berardi will be back in 2010 to attend the event and award the winning designer with a trip to Milan to meet with him in his studio and to visit the Alessi Museum.

Antonio Berardi started his career studying at St.Martins and working with John Galliano, he has now showcased his eponymous collection in Paris since 2005. His collection is a line of ready-to-wear and accessories created for impeccable, urbane women who prefer a striking, classical, dressed-up look, but who respond to advanced fabrics and manufacturing possibilities. Antonio Berardi is one of the fundamental figures in fashion today and has dressed stars including Victoria Beckham, Gwyneth Paltrow, Kyra Sedgwick and Jessica Alba.

Final entries will be due on 1 October 2010 and further information on the Awards
including a link to the stunning new Blue Ribbon TVC can be found at:

This September the Black & White Party is teaming up with Fashion TV [FTV] to showcase a stylish & unforgettable event in support of the National Breast Cancer Foundation. This fabulous event will be held on the 11th September 2010 at the stylish Merivale Ivy Complex [Ivy Sunroom] on George Street.

This time around we would love to give something back and raise some much needed funds and awareness for breast cancer research. All sponsors are donating a unique piece from their collections to be given away in a raffle draw at the end of the evening. A beautiful display of prizes will be assembled at the entrance to the function room and will include couture items, designer shoes and accessories, amazing floral arrangements, photography sessions, magazine subscriptions and much more.

Some of Sydney’s best DJs, will kick start the event at 8pm and seductive burlesque dancers will entice the crowd to forget the outside world and submerge into the remarkable atmosphere of the Ivy Sunroom decor.

Later in the night four very talented, young up & coming Australian designers will let their ideas come to life in a 20 minute runway show organised by Dirty French Word. This will be followed by a live performance by Miss Fai. The party continues with Brazilian dancers and drummers.

The culmination of the night is of course the major runway show, featuring Bowie Couture Collection, Ohara, Phax Swimwear, Luela, Red Collar Project, Nader’s Jewellery Collection and the latest from Cosmopolitan Shoes Boutique. Excellent tailoring, outstanding craftsmanship and undeniable style will triumph in this collaboration. The hair will be styled by Toni & Guy and the models provided by J models.

A very special guest performance by RadioINK will keep the celebration atmosphere going. Be sure to show off the best of your wardrobe’s BLACK & WHITE attire, as Fashion TV will be in the house, capturing the style sense of your inner fashionista.

Raffle tickets will be available to purchase throughout the evening and the draw will take place just before midnight. Please be generous in your donations and support the cause by purchasing Pink Ribbon, Pink Wristband, and raffle tickets or by making a personal donation on the night. From each ticket sold B&W party will donate $5 to the national Breast Cancer Foundation as well as 100% proceeds from raffle tickets sales and NBCF merchandise sales.

Let’s make this night unforgettable, not only by showcasing the best of fashion, but also by demonstrating our passion to make this world to be a better place.

There’s an argument that goes like this: if builders were allowed to design buildings, we would get boring standard boxes and if architects designed buildings, we’d get unbuildable follies, but put the two together and you get the perfect combination of problem and solution.

I take the side of the architects. Shoot for the moon and if you fall short you’ll still land among the stars, or more practically, design something with creativity in mind and worry about the practical application later and it’s exactly this kind of divergent/convergent thinking we’ve applied at Liveworm Gold Coast with our latest newsletter.

Frustrated with how standard the student’s designs were, I grabbed a large square sheet of paper and started folding. I folded it diagonally a couple of times like a grant origami project, then student designer Lindsay Howard designed a layout to suit the angles and folded shape, then we sent it to the printer to decipher.

We were then informed that his folding machine only fits 500mm x 500mm paper and ours was 600mm. Solution? Make our sheet smaller. Done. Getting ready to send it to print and the printer realised his machine couldn’t do the diagonal folds we needed—problem number two. Solution? We sent it to the Endeavour Foundation and a group of people hand folded them for us, at the same cost as machine folding.

The result has been a great creative outcome, an unexpected collaboration and it cost no more than a stock standard folded brochure. Creativity doesn’t always have to cost more.

An interesting part of this project for me has been the response the newsletter. Previously, we had never received any feedback to our newsletters, good or bad. When you produce ordinary things, no one notices. Since mailing out this newsletter however, we received two unsolicited emails on the same day, one from a 50+ designer (not the target age group) who hated it and emailed us to tell us he threw it in the bin, and then another from a 23 year-old designer who congratulated us for being so creative and that he thought it was wonderful.

If you start with the intention to be creative (divergent) and then become solution focussed (convergent), rather than trying to avoid problems in the first place (safe), you will end up with a more creative outcome (exciting). Unfortunately, you may then have to weather the storm when people are challenged by it, or when opinions are divided (bravery).

Newcastle’s annual This is Not Art festival is back in 2010 for its 11th year, taking place from 30th September – 4th October 2010. The festival presents Australia’s most exciting and emergent exhibitions, screenings, performances, panels, workshops, talks, gigs, interventions, live art, and special events in five days of creativity and absolute madness. The festival features over 400 local, national and international artists in a combination of writers, performers, thinkers, independent and industry musicians, creative researchers, electronic artists, dilettantes, and much, much more.

This Is Not Art 2010 is a collaboration between the following:

The Crack Theatre Festival

The Crack Theatre Festival is a new national theatre arts festival and forum and features a three-day program of performances, forums, and workshops that profile the diverse styles and forms within contemporary Australian theatre.

Critical Animals

Critical Animals musters together postgraduate and honours students (as well as those recently graduated and still at a loose end), early career academics, quasi-intellectuals and anyone else interested in devouring critical contexts for the kinds of experimental and emerging arts and media practices in the This Is Not Art program.

Electrofringe

Electrofringe is a festival of experimental electronic arts and culture dedicated to skills development and artistic exchange. It focuses on uncovering emergent forms and places a particular emphasis on encouraging exchange between emerging and established artists.

National Young Writers’ Festival

The National Young Writers’ Festival is Australia’s premier event for emerging writers, publishers, performers and trouble-makers. Far from the seas of white hair, book signings and celebrity author worship you might expect, the NYWF is a DIY, hands-on conversation between equals.

This is Not Art is a key project for the Octapod Association: a not-for-profit community organisation that acts as a resource base, facilitator and incubator of community driven arts and media projects.

This year, This is Not Art is thrilled to introduce a new venture to its already exciting and innovative program. In response to the city’s lack of public street art, TiNA will be commencing walkARTbout which is aimed at creating a positive solution to the community issue of graffiti and vandalism.

Working with Newcastle City Council and Newcastle City Centre Committee, walkARTbout will showcase the talents of artists from all backgrounds such as printmaking, illustration, aerosol art and painting. As well as sustainable and non-obtrusive forms of street art such as fibre art, moss art, knitting, installations using recycled materials and more to revitalise inner city by actively engaging with the arts community.
