Fashion Palette, the Sydney-based company, which has made a name for itself by providing Australian designers with unique local and international runway platforms returns to New York in September to showcase the Spring 2013 collections from some of our country’s finest fashion designers.
Last year, the Fashion Palette New York (FPNY) line-up included some of Australia’s most celebrated designers – Akira Isogawa, Toni Maticevski, and Bowie Wong, Bettina Liano as well as Samantha Wills to name a few. Together for the first time on one runway these designers showcased their Spring 2012 collections in an exclusive Australian – only show at Canoe Studios in Manhattan, New York.

“Fashion Palette is a unique opportunity offering Australian designers a platform into one of the world’s fashion meccas, New York.” – Bowie Wong
An innovative initiative, FPNY is the brainchild of Sonya Mefaddi, who after four successful years in Australia decided to expand the brand globally last year.
“Australia has some of the world’s best designers.” Says Mefaddi “Fashion Palette New York’s annual event
will once again open doors of opportunities for local talent.”

FPNY was created to organize, centralize, and modernize Australian Fashion, as well as provide a platform like no other for designers to present their collections to world wide media and buyers. Creating recoginition and boosting the growth of Australian labels on a global level.
FPNY takes place early September, when New York becomes the fashion melting pot of the world and will showcasing Australian designers to global buyers, media and fashion VIPs at some of Manhattan’s most iconic venues.

Designer registration is NOW open and close 30th June 2013.

“Numskull is an Australian based artist, working out of Sydney in a variety of fields and mediums including painting, sculpture, illustration and large scale murals.”
As Numbskull will be talking at this years Semi Permanent, we decided to ask him a few questions before the big event.

Tell us a bit about how you came up with your name “Numskull” and how important is anonymity in your field?

I ‘borrowed’ the name from an old british comic strip called “The Numskulls”. It was a small strip inside a larger comic series called “Beano”. I liked it and somehow it stuck.

I started off doing illegal work, so anonymity was half the job. Nowadays, I don’t mind too much if people see my face. I definitely don’t encourage it, but I’m not as protective as I used to be.

Whose work do you relate to most? Who inspires you?

I like the abstract side of the art fence right now. People like Judith Supine, Cain Caser, Perks and Mini and heaps more, inspire me.

What is the most enjoyable aspect of working outdoors – could you ever work in an office?

The freedom of not being locked onto a computer screen is the best feeling, although I still do that too. I like using my hands, mixing paints and talking to people whilst painting so when I get the chance to paint outside, I take it.
I used to work in an office. Hopefully I’ll never have to do it again.

How do you want other people to respond to your work?

I want people to be engaged and walk away visually satisfied. A lot of my work at the moment deals with coloured patterns and their relationships. If I can find a combination that makes someone feel good, I’m happy. Other than that, a lot of my work is up for the viewers interpretation.

Do you think “street art” is now being seen as a more respectable form of art?

People aren’t afraid to talk to us when we paint walls these days, so I guess something has changed in the publics mind.
I think as soon as something sells for a lot of money, people take it seriously.

Krs-Ones ‘Out for Fame’ or ‘These walls don’t lie’ by looptroop?

Last Caress by The Misfits

One place you would really like to do an art work, but would never ‘legally’ be allowed?

There are a heap of massive walls around Sydney i’ve had my eyes on for a long long time, but I have no way of finding out who owns them. I wouldn’t mind painting geodes all over the Opera House. That might look nice!

Will Sydney ever adopt Melbourne’s philosophy regarding street art, and or have we already started to?

This has been asked again and again. I honestly think Sydney is a great city for public art right now. In terms of “street art” Melbourne has and always will have it over Sydney. But that’s fine. I think Sydney as a city is starting to find it’s own feet in that battle.

Tell us a bit about your involvement with the Semi Perm?

I will be speaking alongside Beastman and Marty Routledge under our new collective brand called The Hours. We’ll be chatting about what we’ve been up to and how it all came about. Other than that, Marty and I will be painting as part of the Friday night exhibition, and we will be co-hosting an event on the Sunday.

Who are you looking forward to seeing at Semi Perm?

Perks and Mini…………!

What’s next on the horizon for you?

I’m working on a few things that can’t be talked about just yet. Other than that, I will be traveling to a few countries for some exhibitions and a couple of large mural projects. Check my website for updates www.funskull.com

MIAF is super excited to be involved in saving a really important part of Australian animation history – and you can be too!

The Grendel Fund is a once-in-a-life-time opportunity to raise funds to ensure the digital preservation of Alex Stitt’s groundbreaking animated feature ‘Grendel Grendel Grendel’ (1981).

In the festival’s 13 years, this is absolutely the MOST significant and rewarding thing we’ve been able to pull off – hands down!

We quickly discovered digitising a 35mm feature is a rather expensive process. Fortunately, the good people at one of the leading film transfer houses have agreed to sponsor half the cost, so we’re asking for your help to raise the remainder.

To make this happen, the campaign goal is AUS$9,000

$8,000 for 50% of the digital transfer
$400 pozible fees
$600 transaction/admin fees

If we achieve more than this amount (which would be amazingly fantastic), we want to help ‘Grendel Grendel Grendel’ screen beyond MIAF13.

PLEDGE HERE! pozible.com/grendelfund

This year we are launching our first ever Das Monk photography competition, in association with Lomography Australia/NZ. Over the next month, we’ll be opening our doors (and inboxes) to budding young photographers who think they can bring something new to the Das Monk table, as we are looking for an amazing photo to print on a t-shirt in one of our upcoming seasons.

Drawing inspiration from the lo-fi analogue aesthetic of Lomo cameras, this year’s theme is “Ride”

Entries close on June 6, and the winner (chosen by us) will receive a Lomo Sprocket Rocket Camera and film pack, a Das Monk tee/sweatshirt pack, $250 cash, and of course their very own Das Monk t-shirt featuring their winning entry!

To enter, follow the guidelines below:

1. Email your photos (max 3 photos per entry) to mail@dasmonk.com
2. Include a brief bio, including a website link if you have one.
3. A brief explanation of how it relates to the theme, “Ride”.

Good luck!

Tickets are now on sale for designEX’s Speaker Series, The Business of Design. The collection of sessions are aimed at openly discussing the current economic climate and its effects on local practices/studios; the challenges in creating and maintaining workplaces that promote thought leadership and idea generation that, with our location and isolation can be an issue. Featuring a number of influential speakers from the industry and with impressive international guest speaker, Michael Young, we will look to raise the topic of local collaboration and interdisciplinary approaches and the importance of community.

Joining Michael Young on the stage to speak is a collection of some big players from a range of architecture and design companies including Western Australia’s pioneering architectural firm, Felix, lead by Rene Van Meeuwen; Melbourne-based architect and director of PHOOEY Architects, Emma Young; French fabric house Pierre Frey’s Creative Director, Patrick Frey and GECA’s Rupert Posner to name just a few.

With more than 20 years of design and project experience, Emma Young’s topic for her designEx presentation will be entitled, “Adaption & Re-Use”. Drawing on PHOOEY’S recent works on internationally recognised projects, Emma will discuss PHOOEY’S practice’s upcycling specialty. In particular she will discuss their latest project, the Cubo house (to be completed in April) which applies the surrealist technique of Cubomania to catalogue, re-use and re-invent the demolished building materials.

“I feel extremely privileged to have been invited to speak at designEX 2013 and I am very excited to have the opportunity to share some of our ideas with the wider community,” said Emma Young.

Felix is quickly making a name for itself for its innovative projects and use of 3D studio. Headed by Rene Van Meeuwan, the team of four architects will showcase a range of their recent works at designEX, focusing on a competition in South Australia called, Henley Square and a Sculpture Park set up in Perth to celebrate the Centenary of the University of Western Australia, using Augmented Reality. The guys were also finalists in the Green Square competition (top 5 out of 160 entrants), where they proposed moving the library functions out of the building into the landscape.

Very special Friend of the Federation (graphic designer / top bloke / male model / wests tigers tragic) Paul Barton has secured a Gold Charity entry to this years to City2Surf and is looking for your help to sponsor him in the journey to raise money for Cure Cancer Australia. Would be awesome if you could get behind him with even a few dollars.

I have been lucky enough to secure a Gold Charity Entry to the 2013 City2Surf.

I’ll be running to raise money for Cure Cancer Australia who have a goal of ‘a world without cancer, nothing less’. One in two families are touched by cancer in their lifetime, one life lost to cancer is still one too many. Enough is enough…

I’ll run the 14kms if you can help support the cause and share the link with family and friends. Thank you.
