Q&A with Muchacho designer, Andy Cameron

July 16th, 2010

Name of fashion label / Why is it called that?
The word ‘muchacho’ is Mexican colloquial slang for your friend, or ‘mate’. When I was dreaming of creating this brand, I wanted to recreate a style for the relaxed, laid-back way of life in South America. I could see similarities too between that Latino verve for life and our own Australian attitudes; a love of the sun, our friends and our distinct fashion style.

Where are you based?
Bondi, Sydney.

How did you start the label?
I quit my job in finance a few years ago, deciding to combine my love for fashion and photography and the South American way of life. So now, Muchacho is two years old and, as any parent would say, growing fast!

The markets were the kick-off. The Sydney weekend markets at Paddington and Bondi have the most fantastic customers – they know what they want; the best quality fabrics and cuts, something unique that demonstrates their own style. You learn pretty quickly what works and what doesn’t!

What is the aesthetic of Muchacho?
Relaxed, easy to wear and comfortable fabrics. Faded tones and unique prints.

I decided not to cut corners and order pre-made t-shirts from China for example, then print on them, but I wanted a cut that was my style, with a comfortable fit and stylish. I sourced fabrics from Australia and around the world in order to get the comfort factor I strive for.

Do you have any tips for aspiring designers?
You need to have a clear vision. Work out what you like and why you’re doing it that way, then design accordingly. In the beginning I just wanted to design for what I like, for me…and I still do.

Did you have an education in fashion? How did you learn the technical aspects?
I have no formal fashion training – I just kept asking questions of the industry myself.

What kind of fabrics do you use?
I get fabrics from all over the world – striving for high quality and natural fibres. 100% cotton, either soft-combed and slub-weave cottons, as well as soft micro-modal which is made from Beech tree fibers.

Do you have any stockists overseas?
Yes – Germany and New Zealand and soon to be in the U.S.

What kind of models do you choose to represent your label?
Fresh and natural.

I agree that people see your brand through the photos and models – it’s a way of imagining themselves wearing and living that style. So, for the designer, the model is a reflection of what your style and philosophy is. In March, earlier this year, I did a photo shoot in Rio and the next will be in Buenos Aires. These places encapsulate the Muchacho brand and take it where I want the wearer to be.

What can we expect to see next from Muchacho?
The 2011 summer range features more of the unique signature prints – there are t-shirts, boardies, singlets and casual shorts for guys, and dresses, kaftans, tops and shorts for girls.

Which is your favourite design or piece from your label?
The ‘Futebol na Praia’ (Beach Football) t-shirt has been hugely popular, so it was my trusty favourite for a long while. It depicts guys playing a lazy game of football on the beach in Salvador, Brasil.

But the jury’s out because I just finished a design last night showing a guy riding an old Ducati motorbike through country Argentina – and I think it’s going to a new fave!
