Territory Artist Jasmine Jan will be serving up a visual feast of Egrets, Herons, Finches, Kingfishers, Lorikeets and Pigeons to a Chinese audience of 65 000 at the Guangzhou International Art Fair in southern China.
Ms Jan is the only Territory Artist represented in the pavilion of 17 Australian artists. The international art fair will have artists from Asia, Europe and the United States of America represented in the massive exhibition hall. During the 5 day exhibition there will be an average of 10 000 visitors coming through daily.
Ms Jan was invited by curator of Art Platform, Fergus Tam to participate in the Art Fair following her solo exhibition this year at Territory Craft titled “Wild Water – Coloured Dust”. Mr Tam stated that Ms Jan’s East-West Fusion Watercolours of North Australian Wildlife would really appeal to Chinese audiences. “The Chinese people have a fascination for Australian wildlife. Her unique style of brightly coloured watercolours of Australian animals have a very strong oriental feel which will be very appealing to Chinese audiences.” Darwin born resident Ms Jan has been painting and exhibiting professionally for the last 5 years. Ms Jan an ABC, Australian-born-Chinese states that her greatest challenge will be overcoming the language barrier. Even though she is Chinese she doesn’t speak any Chinese and will have a translator with her for the duration of the exhibition. “I think my appearance is really going to cause some confusion. I will definitely blend in with the locals as a Chinese person but as soon as I speak my strong Australian accent is really going to throw them. Just imagine Bruce Lee with a Paul Hogan accent…it could be quite funny actually.” Ms Jan leaves Darwin on the 24th November 2007 and will be away for two weeks participating in the Guangzhou International Art Fair and also visiting Singapore on her way back to Darwin to meet with galleries in Singapore.

For those wanting to see examples of Jasmine’s work they can visit the Framed Gallery Christmas exhibition which opens on Friday the 16th of November 2007 at 6:30pm. The “Salt, Sand and Driving Rain” Christmas exhibition features a number of paintings similar to the ones she will be taking to China. It will also be a chance to meet Jasmine before she leaves for China as she will be at the opening night for the exhibition
