A STUDY OF BIRDS

From the 16th to the 29th of March, Studio 2017 in Sydney’s waterloo will showcase ‘A study of birds’ jewellery and sculptural works by artist Sian Edwards, the inaugural recipient of the studio 20/17 graduate award. Sian Edwards recently completed her honours in a bachelor of fine art at Monash University. Prior to that she completed an advanced diploma in jewellery and object design at Enmore design centre Sydney.
Sian primarily works with mild steel for its strength in form and the black surface that can be achieved through oxidisation. Her current collection is essentially studies of birds, which is constructed from carefully selected remnants from material culture.
“Materials and processes are the driving force of my practice and it is through these, in the act of making, with curiosity, experiment and play that my work emerges. I have a keen interest in the sensual nature of materials and the forms I produce require a tactile interaction to translate entirely. These pieces have been rendered directly from a collection of specimens sourced from the Melbourne Museum and the Australian Museum in Sydney. They are essentially studies of birds. The forms are constructed from carefully selected remnants from material culture. Each material references a particular fragment of the bird; Glomesh for the scaly skin of their feet, polished graphite for the beak and claws. Each pair is a material rendering of a specific bird species. Their construction is undertaken with as close attention to anatomy as their materiality allows.” – Sian Edwards
