Serpent and the Swan

A continuing fascination with the anatomy of creatures and the animal kingdom they inhabit inspired a Sydney sister duo, Hayley and Lauri Smith, to combine their 10 years experience in the costume design and fashion industry to create a label that emulates the raw and organic composition of nature.  Read the rest of Monique Arnold's article →

Eskimo – Legs 11

The team at Eskimo showed they could handle the heat when asked to participate in a calendar entitled Coroborree 2010, created by Landor.

The brief was to create an image that numerically depicts one month of the year. With their month being November, Eskimo teamed up with photographer David McKelvey and created a pair of Pirelli-esque pins (“Legs 11”) to reinforce the 11th month. Read more about Eskimos Legs 11 →

Were All Gonna Die – 100 meters of existence

In the beginning of 2007 I was in a state of mind where I knew that I had to do something different than what I usually do – that is eat, sleep, hang out with friends and work as a freelance photographer in Copenhagen. I decided to go to Berlin and live in a friend’s flat, trying to write a novel. I just wanted to get away and into a world – an imaginative one – that I could create and develop through fiction. I did come up with a plot for the novel which I liked, and I did appreciate the way I went about writing – that is: forcing myself not to delete a single word from the text as I was writing the text – knowing from experience that editing while writing is the safest way to make sure that you’re writing a never-ending story. (I once wrote half a novel in four years because of this unconstructive editing mania). (more…)

Diamond Studded Technology

Technological convergence is everywhere. Cell phone service providers offer internet as well as cable television packages. Cell phones provide internet access, multi-media platforms and navigational assistance. Videogame consoles serve as DVD players, internet browsers, as well as social networking tools. These are exciting times people. There exists, however, another trend in today’s day and age, a trend which anyone watching music videos on any of these aforementioned devices recognizes as a dominant presence in pop culture and celebrity fashion: we are in the age of “Bling.” Jewellery stores have never been busier with rappers, rockers, and actors alike strolling in, dropping giant wads of cash on the counter so they can pimp-their-lives. Well, as was mentioned we are also in the age of convergence. Technology, meet Bling. Bling, meet technology. Cell phones and laptops have become as much an accessory item as a purse or a watch. So why not blingify the heck out of them?! Check out some people who have.

How to sell more microstock? The right way is good keywording.

When I started contributing to microstock, I didn’t care a lot about keywording. After the first short period when I submitted everything I had, I started to pay attention to the type of photos which had been downloaded the most, and I tried to adapt it to my portfolio, however it is difficult. Taking Stock of Stock Photos

As a photo editor and designer, I always have to ask the question ‘Where do I get the right pictures from?’ Until recently I used the traditional stock photo houses like ‘Getty images’, ‘Corbis’, ‘Jupiter images’, Alamy, etc.
However I decided to explore the microstock world a little and was quite suprised about the quality of the pictures available on microstock. What I see as a problem of microstock sites is that the content of the microsites is very similar – you will find the same pictures on Dreamstime as on Stockxpert, Fotolia etc. I have listed my favourite microstock sites below – the 4 which are the most popular because they have the largest portfolios. I also added some smaller sites which I found interesting.
